16/12/2015 - New speed limit bye-laws for 30 housing estates

Speed Limits in Housing Estates

A new plan to establish more appropriate speed limits within 30 housing estates throughout Donegal has just come into effect.

Earlier this year Donegal County Council undertook to amend the ‘Road Traffic (Special Speed Limits)(County of Donegal) Bye-Laws 2011’ in order to provide for a more appropriate speed limit (specifically 30 kilometres per hour) on the public roads within 30 housing estates.

In conjunction with the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, the Council commissioned a pilot scheme which identified a number of council estates where it proposed to introduce a 30km/hr ‘Slow Zone’.

After taking into account representations from members of the public and elected councillors, it deemed that a change to the speed limits was appropriate at these housing estates.

Draft Bye-Laws were prepared to reflect the proposed changes and made available for inspection by the general public between September 10th and October 9th.

There was also consultation with An Garda Siochana and also the Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

The Gardaí advised that they had no proposed amendments to the Draft Bye-Laws and while the Transport Infrastructure Ireland was also notified, it explained that their consent was not required as there were no national roads involved.

The proposed Bye-Laws were submitted at the Donegal County Council meeting held on October 28th last and were adopted.

The Bye-Laws came into operation on December 1st.
